An Autistic Poet’s Response

"We are not a scapegoat to be used to further someone else's ends / Those who do not wish us well should turn back while we all can still make amends."

During his April 16 press conference, when Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., chose to portray autism as a preventable part of what he perceives to be a chronic disease epidemic, and as something that destroys the lives of children and families, Aspiritech could not remain silent in response to such harmful rhetoric.

Our employee pool includes artists, athletes, poets, people in relationships, and parents. All of us hold jobs, pay taxes, and contribute to society in meaningful ways. We are entirely human and are able to recognize the humanity in people that don’t look or act exactly like us—a quality not always shared by those in positions of power.

One of our team members penned a poem reflecting on this unprecedented moment and asked that we share it. We’re honored to have this team member’s trust, and to be able to offer opportunities of inclusion to autistic adults seeking meaningful careers and the dignity they deserve.

A Poem, by Anonymous

Across the world are the minds of people

But here at home, those with a certain perspective are threatened by upheaval

There are those who seek to call us weak

So now we shall:

Take pen in hand

Type out words both from our hearts and ones that are planned

Because it is all for one and one for all

Autistic individuals, heed this call and don’t be meek

For there is no room in this world for doubt

We shall write, we shall sing, we shall cry out

Go forth, neurodivergents, and SPEAK!!!!

We are not a scapegoat to be used to further someone else’s ends

Those who do not wish us well should turn back while we all can still make amends

For when love turns to hate, it might burn eternal

So before it is too late, I ask that you turn to science as per our referral

Still we’re thought of as pests?

Can’t these stigmas be laid to rest?

Long enough, we’ve been inflicted

By people, most bigoted

Now is the time to fly

Make the winds blow

Have the water overflow

So that the flames of hatred will die

Show the world our value

Replace the lies with what is true

For the odds we shall defy

We will create a world where we don’t have to hide

Autistic individuals, be empowered

And speak out against a rhetoric most sour

Together we must band

We shall stand

Hand in hand
