Tech Services for Higher Education

Helping Universities Deliver Accessible and Reliable Digital Services

Colleges and universities face constant pressure to deliver accessible, high-quality digital experiences across platforms for their students, faculty and staff. Every application must meet quality and accessibility standards, as well as protect sensitive institutional and student data.

Aspiritech embeds human-led expertise in accessibility, quality assurance and data management directly into higher education teams, helping institutions meet compliance requirements and deliver digital services with confidence.

Higher Education IT Teams Are Under Pressure From Every Direction.

Universities and colleges operate under complex regulatory frameworks while striving to deliver high-impact digital learning experiences. Technology teams are expected to maintain and expand digital services, often with staffing and budget constraints that haven’t kept pace with institutional ambitions or compliance obligations.

Common challenges Aspiritech hears from higher education IT and operations leaders:

  • Accessibility gaps across the digital campus: Learning management systems, research platforms, registration portals and course materials must be accessible to all students under Section 508, ADA and increasingly stringent mandates. Yet accessibility is frequently treated as a retrofit rather than a built-in practice, leaving institutions exposed to legal action and reputational harm.
  • QA bottlenecks on student-facing platforms: When learning platforms, registration tools or campus service applications release updates, they have to be free of defects in order to maintain functionality and safeguard trust. Manual QA processes don’t scale with the pace of digital expansion, but automation expertise is often limited within institutional IT teams.
  • Fragmented and ungoverned data: Institutions manage sensitive student, research, and administrative data across disconnected systems. Without consistent governance and integration, reporting becomes a lengthy process and leadership lacks the data confidence needed for strategic decisions.
  • FERPA, HIPAA and regulatory compliance pressure: Higher education institutions navigate overlapping privacy and compliance obligations: FERPA for student records, HIPAA for health services data and institutional policies that vary by program and department. Gaps create liability and can undermine student and community trust.

These challenges are so common that they form the operational baseline for most institutions. Aspiritech provides structured, scalable support to address them all.

The Cost to Fix Bugs Increases in Later Development Stages

A bar chart showing that the relative cost to fix bugs is about 2x when detected in the Requirements/Architecture stage, 5x in the Coding stage, 10x in the Integration/Component Testing stage. 15x in the System/Acceptance Testing stage, and 30x in the Production/Post-Release stage.

The effort—and cost—involved in identifying and fixing defects increases exponentially as software moves through the development cycle.

We’ll help your team identify and remediate potential issues in the testing phases, which mitigates costs and prevents major outages and downtime.

Case Study: Building Accessible Digital Resources for People With Disabilities

Accessibility audits are only as valuable as the expertise behind them. When the platforms at stake serve people with traumatic brain injuries and other disabilities, the margin for error is even smaller.

Our partnership with the Human Services Research Institute demonstrates what happens when mission alignment and technical rigor work together.

By combining Aspiritech’s accessibility expertise with HSRI’s deep knowledge of disability services, we delivered two fully remediated, Section 508-compliant websites on time and under budget.

Accessibility Review and Remediation for Two Government-Facing Websites

The Human Services Research Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to improving public services and support for people with disabilities, engaged Aspiritech in 2022 to conduct a structured accessibility review of a new website for its Traumatic Brain Injury Technical Assistance and Resource Center. This hub for state and local government grantees was funded by the Administration for Community Living. HSRI needed the site audited and remediated before launch, and needed a partner with the expertise to move quickly.

The engagement included:

  • Audit: Aspiritech conducted a comprehensive accessibility review of the TBI Technical Assistance and Resource Center website against WCAG and Section 508 standards, identifying issues requiring remediation before go-live.
  • Remediation: Based on audit findings, Aspiritech executed remediation directly, ensuring fixes were implemented correctly and verified.
  • Scope expansion: Midway through the engagement, HSRI brought Aspiritech onto a second website for its National Center on Advancing Person-Centered Practices and Systems, a government client project with its own 508-compliance requirements.
  • Platform troubleshooting: When accessibility testing flagged an issue rooted in the website platform itself rather than HSRI’s code, Aspiritech’s project manager spent hours working directly with the platform provider to diagnose and resolve it, saving HSRI from costly development workarounds.

Both websites launched on time. HSRI has since structured a quarterly accessibility audit and remediation cadence with Aspiritech to maintain compliance as new content is added.

A Partnership Built on Shared Values and Technical Depth

The HSRI team noted Aspiritech’s technical expertise immediately, but what distinguished the engagement was the combination of communication and follow-through that carried both projects across the finish line.

HSRI’s team members balanced this work against full schedules, and their government clients introduced unpredictable feedback and approval timelines. Aspiritech’s flexibility with scheduling and willingness to accept feedback asynchronously was critical to keeping both projects on track.

The mission alignment between the two organizations added depth to the working relationship from the start. “The fact that Aspiritech creates valued employment and career development for a neurodiverse group of employees aligns very well with our intent to ensure the companies we do business with share the values of HSRI as an organization,” said Alexandra Bonardi, Vice President, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities at HSRI.

The result was an engagement that HSRI’s team didn’t want to end. “It’s been such a great relationship that we want to continue, so I think that tells you a lot.” And on recommending Aspiritech for accessibility work: “If anyone’s looking for accessibility work, doing an audit and remediation, definitely Aspiritech is No. 1 on my list — no reservations.”

Frequently Asked Questions

LMS accessibility is one of the most complex challenges in higher education digital compliance because it involves the platform itself, the course content built within it and the third-party tools integrated into it. Each component has its own accessibility profile

Aspiritech audits all three layers, prioritizes findings and works with design and development teams to build accessibility into the full LMS ecosystem.

Yes. Building internal capacity is a core part of how Aspiritech approaches every engagement. Alongside our accessibility testing work, we provide training and embedded workflow support for technology, instructional design, procurement and QA teams.

The goal is to ensure your institution can maintain and extend accessibility practices independently over time.

FERPA compliance is embedded as a baseline requirement in all of Aspiritech’s higher education data engagements. We do not treat it as a separate workstream. Our data governance work includes data inventory and classification that identifies FERPA-covered records, access control frameworks that enforce need-to-know principles and documentation practices that support institutional compliance obligations.

We work closely with institutional compliance teams to ensure governance frameworks align with both federal requirements and institutional policy.

We can. Large platform migrations and major system upgrades are among the highest-risk QA scenarios in higher education, and they are a core use case for Aspiritech’s embedded QA model.

We provide comprehensive testing coverage across functional, regression, accessibility and integration dimensions for major migrations. We also offer documentation aligned to institutional project management and vendor contract requirements.

Engaging QA support early in the migration process significantly reduces the risk of defects reaching students and faculty at critical academic moments.

Aspiritech is experienced working within higher education procurement frameworks, including institutional RFP processes, sole-source justifications and cooperative purchasing agreements that many colleges and universities use to streamline vendor engagement.

We work with institutional procurement teams to structure engagements appropriately for your specific procurement requirements.
